The Ideal City

The Ideal City

c. 1480–1484

This iconic Renaissance panel painting depicts an imaginary city square with perfectly symmetrical architecture, showcasing the era's fascination with linear perspective and classical ideals. The empty piazza, flanked by elegant buildings with Roman arches and columns, represents the humanist vision of an orderly, rational urban space. It is one of only three known "ideal city" panels from the Italian Renaissance.
