Madonna and Child with Saints

This luminous altarpiece by the Sienese painter Sano di Pietro shows the Virgin Mary enthroned with the Christ Child, surrounded by saints. The rich gold ground, intricate decorative patterns, and jewel-like colors are characteristic of the late Sienese Gothic tradition. Despite being painted decades after the Renaissance revolution in Florence, this work demonstrates the enduring appeal of the medieval aesthetic in Siena.
