Sarcophagus of the Amazons

c. 350 BC

This extraordinary painted Etruscan sarcophagus depicts fierce battle scenes between Greeks and Amazons, the legendary warrior women. The vivid colors—remarkably preserved over 2,300 years—show dynamic combat scenes with detailed armor, weapons, and horses. It is one of the finest examples of Etruscan painting to survive from antiquity and a centerpiece of the Walters' ancient art collection.
