Chinese Lacquer Throne Screen

c. 18th century

The Walters houses an exceptional collection of Asian decorative arts, including exquisite Chinese lacquer work. This elaborate throne screen from the Qing Dynasty showcases the virtuosity of Chinese lacquer artisans. Multiple layers of lacquer, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, are applied, carved, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and decorated with gold. The museum's Asian art collection was a personal passion of founder Henry Walters.
