Claude Monet
Woman with a Parasol
1875
Claude Monet painted 'Woman with a Parasol — Madame Monet and Her Son' in 1875 in the meadows of Argenteuil, catching his wife Camille and their young son Jean from below so that they appear silhouetted against a luminous summer sky. Dress, scarf, grasses, and cloud are rendered in a single energetic flicker of brushstrokes, and the figures seem caught only in the instant before the wind turns them away. Now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, it is one of the most beloved images of Impressionism's early years and of the Monet family.
