Francisco Goya
The Clothed Maja
1800–1805
Painted between 1800 and 1805 as a companion to 'The Nude Maja', Francisco Goya's 'The Clothed Maja' shows the same model in the same pose on the same sofa, now wearing a nearly transparent white dress that reveals rather than conceals her body. The two pictures were apparently hung on a mechanism that allowed the nude to be covered by the clothed — making the private 'unveiling' the actual raison d'être of the pair. Today they are displayed side by side at the Prado, restoring something of the scandalous intimacy of Godoy's private cabinet.
