Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji)

c. 1830–1832

One of the most celebrated prints from Katsushika Hokusai's series 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' (c. 1830–1832), this woodblock captures the moment when a clear southerly wind (gaifū) at dawn in late summer turns the western slope of Fuji a deep vermillion. Built on the stark tripartite contrast of sky, mountain, and dark forest, the austere design and monumental scale were revolutionary in the history of graphic art — its color-block simplicity profoundly shaping Western modernist prints. Internationally it is better known as 'Red Fuji'.
