MOCA Los Angeles — Downtown's Contemporary Art Hub

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), established in 1979, is the city's first museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. It operates two distinct venues: the Grand Avenue building in downtown Los Angeles and the Geffen Contemporary in Little Tokyo. These locations, a 15-minute walk apart, offer diverse exhibition experiences, with the Grand Avenue focusing on painting and sculpture, and the Geffen on large-scale installations and experimental works.

Architectural Icons: Isozaki and Gehry

MOCA's Grand Avenue building, completed in 1986, was designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. His first U.S. commission, it features red Indian sandstone, pyramid skylights, and geometric volumes, a hallmark of postmodern architecture. The Geffen Contemporary, transformed by Frank Gehry in 1983 from a police vehicle warehouse, became a permanent annex due to its expansive, column-free halls, ideal for large installations and performances.

A Comprehensive Collection of Modern Masters

MOCA boasts over 7,000 works, one of the most comprehensive collections of post-war and contemporary art on the U.S. West Coast. It includes influential artists like Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly, and Robert Rauschenberg, representing shifts after Abstract Expressionism. The museum also features Pop Art and New Wave American art by Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, alongside works by local LA artists Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy. Artists exploring identity and political discourse, such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Kara Walker, are also showcased.

Visiting Information

MOCA offers free admission and is closed on Mondays. Operating hours are 11 AM to 5 PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with extended hours until 8 PM on Thursdays. Weekend hours are 11 AM to 6 PM. The Grand Avenue building is a 5-minute walk from the 'Civic Center/Grand Park' Metro station, and the Geffen Contemporary is a 7-minute walk from the 'Little Tokyo/Arts District' station. A minimum of 2-3 hours is recommended, and it can be combined with nearby attractions like the Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Broad museum for a full cultural experience.
