Atelier des Lumières — Paris's Immersive Art Foundry
At a Glance
Atelier des Lumières is a digital immersive art space in Paris's 11th arrondissement. The opening 2018 exhibition on Gustav Klimt crossed one million visitors in under a year, and follow-ups on Van Gogh, Monet, Dalí, Chagall, and Mondrian turned the space into the prototype of the immersive museum.
A Foundry's Second Life
The building opened in 1835 as an iron foundry. Long abandoned, it was acquired by the French cultural foundation Culturespaces in 2013 and reopened in 2018. Inside, a single 3,300 m² hall with 10-metre ceilings holds 140 projectors and 50 speakers, casting imagery across walls, floor, and columns.
What You Will See
- Main Show (~35 min) — a seasonal artist projected in choreographed video and sound.
- Short Program (~15 min) — a companion piece by a contemporary digital artist.
- Studio — a smaller room for emerging artists and VR works.
- Two or three major new programs per year, increasingly in collaborations (Mondrian × Hugo Boss, etc.).
Visiting Tips
Five minutes from Voltaire or Saint-Ambroise (Line 9). Entry is timed-ticket; book a week ahead on weekends. Free movement inside, so wear comfortable shoes. Plan 60–90 minutes total. It works best as a counter-beat to the Orsay or Louvre rather than a replacement. Kids should note the bright, loud environment.
