The Broad — The Honeycomb Museum in Downtown LA
At a Glance
The Broad is a private contemporary art museum on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles. It opened in September 2015 to present the 2,000-work collection of Eli & Edythe Broad, and it remains free to the general public—one of the most accessible contemporary museums on the US West Coast.
The Veil and the Vault
Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the building is wrapped in 2,500 diamond-shaped openings—the "Veil"—made of glass-fiber-reinforced concrete that filters daylight into the galleries. The storage area between the second and third floors, the "Vault," has glass walls that reveal part of the collection in transit. It faces Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in a pointed dialogue.
