The Whitechapel Gallery on London's East End High Street is the UK's oldest contemporary art institution, founded 1901. Its 1899 Art Nouveau brick facade by Charles Harrison Townsend is Grade II* listed.
Key Moments in British Art
Picasso's Guernica had its UK debut here in 1939 to raise Spanish Civil War relief funds. The 1958 "New American Painting" introduced Pollock and Rothko to Britain. Hockney's first retrospective (1970), Frida Kahlo's 1982 Europe show, and Lucian Freud's 2000 retrospective all opened here.
