Basel's Light-Filled Modern Masters by Renzo Piano
Fondation Beyeler, located in Riehen, a suburb of Basel, Switzerland, opened in 1997 within Berower Park. Its unique address in Weil am Rhein, Germany, reflects its position near the Swiss, French, and German borders. The museum is a 25-minute tram ride (Tram 6) from Basel SBB station.
Designed by acclaimed Italian architect Renzo Piano, the low, single-story structure features a signature glass roof. This allows natural light to directly illuminate the artworks, earning it the title "the most beautifully lit museum in Northern Europe." Piano's design integrates seamlessly with the park, using local stone and large windows that offer views of the natural landscape.
A Lifetime Collection by Ernst and Hildy Beyeler
The museum's origins trace to 1945 when Ernst Beyeler, a renowned art dealer, opened a bookshop in Basel. He and his wife, Hildy, spent decades building a significant collection of 20th-century art, fostering close relationships with masters like Picasso, Giacometti, and Mondrian. In 1982, the Beyelers established the Fondation Beyeler, transferring their collection of approximately 400 artworks to public ownership, ensuring its preservation and accessibility.
Collection Highlights and Unique Spaces
