Ando's Concrete Box Inside a Venetian Customs House
Punta della Dogana — Venice's Historic Customs House Transformed
Punta della Dogana, located at Dorsoduro, 2, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy, stands at the strategic confluence of the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal in Venice. This triangular site, once a pivotal customs house for the Venetian Republic, now serves as a prominent contemporary art museum, housing the François Pinault Collection.
From 17th-Century Customs to Modern Art Space
Originally built in the late 17th century as Dogana da Mar, the building functioned as a customs and storage facility for over 300 years. In 2009, it reopened as an art space, following a meticulous renovation led by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. His design preserved the historic brick walls and wooden truss roof, while seamlessly integrating modern exposed concrete volumes within.
The Vision of François Pinault and Tadao Ando's Intervention
François Pinault, founder of Kering, initiated the project to showcase his extensive contemporary art collection. After an earlier plan for a museum in Paris fell through, he turned to Venice, acquiring Palazzo Grassi in 2006 and commissioning Ando in 2007 for Punta della Dogana. Ando's architectural philosophy emphasized minimal intervention, allowing the new concrete structures to exist independently within the historical shell, creating a unique "two buildings in one" experience.
Highlights of the Collection and Architecture
The Pinault Collection comprises approximately 5,000 works by leading contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Marlene Dumas, and Erwin Wurm. Exhibitions rotate, offering diverse perspectives on modern art. Architecturally, Ando's signature exposed concrete walls, complete with title pin marks, and elegant glass staircases are integral to the experience.
A key feature is "The Tip," a glass-walled viewpoint at the building's apex, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Grand Canal, Giudecca Canal, San Marco Square, and Santa Maria della Salute Basilica. Additionally, the exposed 17th-century wooden trusses in the upper galleries provide a striking contrast between historical Venetian craftsmanship and contemporary art installations.
Visiting Punta della Dogana
Punta della Dogana is easily accessible via Vaporetto Line 1 to the Salute station, a 5-minute walk away. Admission is 15€ for adults, with a combined ticket for Palazzo Grassi available for 22€. The museum operates Wednesday to Monday from 10:00 to 19:00 and is closed on Tuesdays. During the Venice Biennale season (May-November), early morning visits are recommended due to high visitor numbers. The canal-side exterior is also a popular spot for sunset photography.
Visitors can combine their visit with other nearby art institutions in the Dorsoduro district, such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Gallerie dell'Accademia, both within a 15-minute walk. This allows for a comprehensive exploration of Venice's rich art scene in a single area.
