Van Abbemuseum: Eindhoven's Laboratory of Radical Curation
The Van Abbemuseum, located at Wal 6, 5611 GG Eindhoven, Netherlands, is one of the oldest public museums for modern and contemporary art in the Netherlands. Established in April 1936, it originated from the collection donated by tobacco merchant Henri van Abbe.
The museum's original Dutch Art Deco building was significantly extended by Portuguese architect Abel Cahen (1999-2003), tripling its size. The modern addition contrasts sharply with the historic structure.
Its collection of approximately 3,200 works focuses on post-war European art, particularly artists engaging with social and political issues. The museum is internationally recognized for its radical curatorial experiments since the late 20th century.
Since Charles Esche's appointment as director in 2004, the museum has questioned "what a museum is and for whom it exists," transforming it into a discursive and experimental institution.
Key projects include the "Museum of Arte Útil," which explores art's practical function by converting exhibition spaces into community hubs. "The Way Beyond Art" reconfigures the collection to challenge Western-centric art historical narratives.
A pioneer in digital accessibility, the museum launched the world's first digital 3D archive and free high-resolution images of its entire collection in 2017.
Must-see works include El Lissitzky's "Proun Room," a unique 1:1 restoration and museum symbol. The collection also features significant Russian avant-garde works by Malevich, Tatlin, and Rodchenko, offering deep insight into early 20th-century Russian art.
Further highlights are German Expressionism and Die Brücke works by Kirchner and Nolde, alongside post-1960s conceptual and installation art by Beuys, Nauman, and Eliasson, featured in rotating exhibitions.
The "The Collection Now" is an ongoing series of thematic rehangs, reinterpreting the collection from diverse perspectives like feminism, post-colonialism, and climate change, ensuring a fresh experience with each visit.
The museum is a 10-minute walk from Eindhoven Station. Admission is €16. Open Tue-Sun 11:00-17:00 (Thu until 21:00), closed Mon. A 1.5-hour visit is recommended.
Eindhoven, home of Philips and the Dutch design capital, hosts the annual Dutch Design Week. Visitors can combine their trip with the nearby Philips Museum and the iconic Evoluon for a comprehensive cultural and technological experience.
