The Royal Academy of Arts — Britain's First Art School Since 1768
At a Glance
The Royal Academy of Arts in Burlington House was founded in December 1768 under George III, combining Britain's first state-sanctioned art school with a public gallery. The Summer Exhibition has run continuously since 1769 — the world's longest-running annual art show.
School and Gallery Together
Sir Joshua Reynolds's inaugural address remains the school's founding text. Members include Turner, Constable, Gainsborough, Hockney, Gormley and Perry. Chipperfield's 2018 renovation linked Burlington House to the rear Burlington Gardens building.
