Kunstmuseum Bonn — Home of August Macke on the Rhine Museum Mile

Kunstmuseum Bonn is a prominent municipal museum located on the 'Museum Mile' along the Rhine River in Bonn, Germany. Established in 1947 based on the collection of the former Bonn Municipal Art Association, it was significantly re-opened in 1992 in a striking modernist building designed by Austrian architect Axel Schultes. This building, characterized by its white facade, a vast glass-covered central atrium, and marble corridors, stands as a key example of late German modernist museum architecture on the Rhine.

August Macke and German Expressionism

The museum's identity is deeply intertwined with August Macke (1887–1914), a central figure of the German Expressionist group 'Der Blaue Reiter' who grew up in Bonn. The Kunstmuseum Bonn holds the world's largest collection of his works, including over 40 paintings and hundreds of drawings, acquired directly from his heirs. Since a 2019 renovation, the entire second floor is dedicated to a permanent August Macke gallery, chronologically tracing his artistic journey from his early Bonn years to his influential 1914 trip to Tunisia.

Visiting the Museum Mile

Kunstmuseum Bonn is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with extended hours until 9:00 PM on Wednesdays. It is closed on Mondays. Admission is €7 for adults, with free entry on Wednesdays. The museum is easily accessible via U16/63/66 to Heussallee/Museumsmeile station, a 3-minute walk.
