Kunsthal Rotterdam — OMA's 1992 Temple of Exhibition
At a Glance
Kunsthal Rotterdam opened November 1992 in the Museumpark. Built by Rem Koolhaas / OMA, it's one of his first major public buildings and the Netherlands' first German-style "Kunsthalle" with no permanent collection.
Dissecting the Museum
Koolhaas assembled seven galleries with different heights, floors and lights around a diagonal public ramp. The logic later shaped Seattle Central Library and Fondazione Prada.
Highlights
- Seven simultaneous exhibitions across genres.
- Building as architectural experiment.
- Major solo shows — McQueen, Picasso drawings.
- 2012 art heist, now a famous local story.
- Leading youth education programme.
