The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York occupies a landmark building at 2 Columbus Circle — the 1964 'Lollipop Building' by Edward Durell Stone, reclad in 2008 by Allied Works Architecture into a fritted-glass tower that radically redefined Columbus Circle. Founded in 1956 as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, MAD champions the blurred boundary between craft, art, and design, with a collection of roughly 3,000 objects spanning ceramics, glass, textiles, metal, wood, jewelry, and new media from 1950 to the present. Its signature Artist Studios on the sixth floor place working artists in residence where visitors can watch them create, while rotating exhibitions have spotlighted everything from contemporary jewelry and African textiles to the materiality of recycled waste.
