Villa rustica

Villa rustica near Peiting in Bavaria is one of the best-documented Roman country estates surviving in the province of Raetia, dating from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Excavated in successive campaigns since the 1960s, the site preserves the foundations of a central residence, a bath complex with a hypocaust underfloor heating system, a granary, and outbuildings for livestock — partly sheltered by modern protective structures that allow visitors to walk through the ruins. Displays of pottery, glass, bronze tools, and painted wall plaster fragments illuminate daily life on a Roman farm north of the Alps. Integrated with local hiking trails, the villa is a popular open-air archaeology stop for families exploring the Bavarian Alpine foothills.
