Teshima Art Museum

Opened in 2010 on a hillside of Teshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea, the Teshima Art Museum is part of the Benesse Art Site Naoshima network. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA, the structure is a thin concrete shell shaped like a droplet of water, pierced only by two open oval skylights that admit natural light, breeze, and birdsong. Inside there is no furniture or conventional exhibit — instead, artist Rei Naito's permanent work 'Matrix' causes water to emerge from points in the floor, forming beads that roll, merge, and evaporate across the concrete surface throughout the day. The result is a meditative space where architecture, artwork, and the surrounding landscape of rice paddies and ocean become a single shifting experience.
