Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art

Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is Denmark's oldest artist-run exhibition space, founded in 1891 by painters and sculptors protesting the conservative jury system of the Royal Academy. Its distinctive wooden pavilion near Copenhagen's Østerport Station, completed in 1898 and still largely in original form, hosts some 30 exhibitions each year — with no permanent collection, Den Frie devotes itself entirely to temporary shows by emerging Danish and international artists. Governed by a rotating committee of artists and curators, it continues to operate outside the commercial gallery circuit, preserving its founding ethos of artistic self-determination.
