National Museum of Romania

The National Museum of Romanian History (Muzeul Național de Istorie a României) in Bucharest is the country's principal institution for preserving Romania's past, from prehistory to the modern nation-state. Housed in the monumental 1900 Neoclassical former Postal Palace designed by Alexandru Săvulescu, it displays more than 650,000 artifacts — including the spectacular Thracian and Dacian gold treasures (notably the Pietroasele 'Hen with Golden Chicks' and the golden helmet of Coțofenești), the Romanian Crown Jewels, and a life-size plaster cast of Trajan's Column whose reliefs chronicle the Roman conquest of Dacia. A Lapidarium presents Roman inscriptions and funerary stelae, while period galleries trace medieval Moldavia and Wallachia, the 19th-century union, and the monarchy's regalia.
